Have Game, Will Play: Cloudbuilt

As a young woman lays in bed recovering from some reconstructive surgery, necessitated by severe injuries, her mind wanders. She thinks of being in battle and scaling a variety of landscapes. For some reason, she wishes to traverse these environments as quickly as possible.

Cloudbuilt is a third person parkour action platformer that encourages speedruns and leaderboard competition. The levels have many hazards with which to contend including: enemies, lasers, explosions and many walls without guard rails. Cloudbuilt is a beautifully cel-shadedesque  game that can run well above 60 fps. The art style is perfectly suited to its quick, reflex intensive gameplay.

I wish I was better at Cloudbuilt. The controls presented some difficulty for me. During my time with the game controller support was not available but should be forthcoming. Using WASD controls along with a mouse(trackball for me) while shooting, wall running, jumping and boosting (with a jetpack using the shift key) frequently proved to be too much for me. But when I got into a flow and did some successful parkouring, it felt good.  Cloudbuilt is a great game for what it is but its appeal is somewhat niche. Once controller support is available I plan to revisit Cloudbuilt and try again and again and again…
